Anxiety Therapy
Anxiety Therapy for Adults in California
Anxiety therapy is counseling focused on the worry, physical tension, and anticipation that keep a nervous system on alert. It works on two levels at once: practical skills that lower the intensity now, and an understanding of what your anxiety is responding to, so relief lasts beyond the technique. Provided online to adults throughout California.
Why this happens
Why anxiety persists when nothing is wrong
One of the most disorienting parts of anxiety is that it does not wait for a reason. People often say some version of: my life is genuinely fine, so why do I feel like this.
Anxiety is not primarily a response to your circumstances. It is a response to perceived threat, and a nervous system that learned early that vigilance was necessary does not stand down simply because conditions improved. It keeps scanning. Uncertainty, accumulated stress, and old experience all keep it running.
Which is why reassurance alone rarely holds. You can know you are safe and still not feel it, because the part generating the alarm was not persuaded by facts in the first place.
What this often looks like
- Overthinking conversations long after they have ended
- Difficulty falling asleep because your mind will not stop
- Physical tension, a tight chest, a restless stomach, clenched jaw
- Needing reassurance and feeling embarrassed about needing it
- Anticipating the worst outcome and calling it realism
- Feeling calm only once everything is controlled or resolved
The work
How therapy helps
We begin with what makes the days more survivable: recognizing early signals, working with the body rather than arguing with the thoughts, and interrupting the loop before it accelerates.
Then we go underneath it, because anxiety usually has a history. Therapy for anxiety tends to help you:
- Recognize anxiety earlier, while it is still small enough to work with
- Settle physically rather than only reasoning with the worry
- Understand what your anxiety is protecting and what it learned to fear
- Tolerate uncertainty without needing to resolve everything first
- Reduce reassurance-seeking without white-knuckling it
- Feel steadier in the relationships where anxiety shows up most
Getting started
When to consider reaching out
Consider reaching out if anxiety is affecting your sleep, concentration, health, or relationships; if you are organizing your life around avoiding it; or if the coping that used to work has stopped working.
You do not need to be in crisis. Most people I see are managing well by any external measure and are simply tired of how much effort it takes.
“Anxiety does not always need an obvious trigger. It needs a nervous system that learned to stay ready.”
You do not have to keep managing this on your own.
Consultations are free, about 20 minutes, and there is no obligation to book after. It is simply a chance to talk through what is going on and see whether working together feels right.
Common questions
Questions about anxiety therapy
Yes. Therapy is a well-established form of support for anxiety. It helps on two levels: reducing the intensity and frequency of anxious episodes, and addressing what keeps generating them, which is what makes the change durable.
Because anxiety responds to perceived threat rather than to actual circumstances. Uncertainty, accumulated stress, and earlier experiences can keep a nervous system alert long after the original reason has passed. There is a longer answer in this article.
Usually not by trying to think your way out, since analysis is the mechanism rather than the solution. What tends to help is catching the loop earlier, settling the body first, and addressing the underlying fear the overthinking is trying to prevent.
No. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist I do not prescribe. Some people find medication helpful alongside therapy, and I am glad to coordinate with your physician or a psychiatric provider if you choose to explore it.
