Using your benefits

Insurance and reimbursement

Insurance for therapy is more confusing than it needs to be, so here is the short version.

If you have out-of-network mental health benefits, you pay the session fee and I provide a monthly superbill. You submit it to your insurer and they reimburse you directly at their rate. Many plans reimburse a meaningful portion once the deductible is met.

If you would rather not involve insurance at all, that is a legitimate choice. Insurance reimbursement requires a mental health diagnosis on record, and some people prefer to keep their care private.

Bring your questions to the consultation and we will work out what applies to your situation.

Your rights

Good Faith Estimate

Under the federal No Surprises Act, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate explaining the expected cost of your care if you are uninsured or not using insurance. You will receive one in writing before beginning, and you may request an updated estimate at any time.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you have the right to dispute it. Questions about this are welcome at any point.

Questions about cost are welcome in the consultation.

Consultations are free, about 20 minutes, and there is no obligation to book after. It is simply a chance to talk through what is going on and see whether working together feels right.

Common questions

About fees, insurance, and billing

I am able to work with clients through Alma, which supports in-network billing with a number of plans, and I also see clients privately. Because plan participation changes, the most reliable step is to ask during the free consultation and I will tell you exactly what applies to you.

A superbill is an itemized receipt for the sessions you have paid for, containing the information your insurer needs to process an out-of-network claim. You submit it to your plan, and if you have out-of-network mental health benefits they reimburse you directly at their rate.

Four questions cover most of it: Do I have out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits? What percentage is reimbursed after my deductible? What is my out-of-network deductible and how much of it have I met? Is telehealth covered at the same rate as in-person?

Under the federal No Surprises Act, clients who are uninsured or not using insurance are entitled to a written estimate of expected costs before beginning care. You will receive one, and you can request an updated estimate at any point.

Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours notice are charged the full fee, since the time is reserved for you. Genuine emergencies are handled with judgment rather than by rule.
